Manuel Antonio National Park

Damas IslandA unique national park, Carara is a place where many species overlap their ranges.  In this exciting environment, you can be inspired by the butterflies dancing from flower to flower or be dazzled by the colorful feathers of the many brilliant birds that glide around in courtship or just looking for food. You will be amazed by wonderful mother nature’s creations.  Come get a close look at the great variety of habitats that are easily discovered in this gorgeous national park.

The Carara National Park was founded on April 27th 1978.  It is 4700 hectares (about 11, 600 acres) and is located at the south side of the Tárcoles River just 20 kilometers
(11.5 miles) north of Jacó.  It’s the transition region between the dry forest from the north of Costa Rica and the more humid areas in the south. This provides the enormous diversity found in Carara.

This park is also culturally interesting because pre-Columbian artifacts have been found in this area.
You can expect to see a large sampling of the animal kingdom - anteater, agoutis, tayras, crocodiles, caiman, basilicus and some iguanas.  And of course Carara is a special paradise for birders, thanks to the great diversity of species and to the Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao), which has an adequate breeding area and source of food within the park area.
